GCPC 2015
This day was not like any other day. It was a day of shouts of happiness and frustration. It was a day of half eaten pizza and tons of candies disappearing. It was a day of records and alterations. So what was this very day about?
The story begins at Saturday the 06/20/2015 at about 10:30. The campus Garching-Forschungszentrum was almost empty, except for a few students aiming for the mathematics and informatics building. Inside, everyone was going straight into the computer room where we were instantly welcomed by music from Two Steps From Hell. What music would fit better for the tasks that we were going to solve?
At eleven o’clock the GCPC contest started. The GCPC, short for German Collegiate Programming Contest, is a programming contest where each team tries to solve as many problems as possible within five hours. Each team consists of up to three members, but to make it more difficult, only one computer is allowed. When a solution is found, it is uploaded to an online judge. Allowed languages are Java, C/C++ and Python. After some seconds, the result is shown. It can either be “Correct” and everybody cheers and the best: you get a balloon! But sadly, it turned red too often, meaning “Wrong Answer” or “Timelimit Exceeded” and we were searching even more assiduously where the error lies.
The world shrank to my team, the computer and the sheet of problems. The only interruption was the obligatory pizza lunch. This was also the time when one noticed the other teams, although we were sitting in the same room.
At a total, 62 teams participated at the GCPC, and from that 21 teams came from the TUM. The room was crowded with around 100 computer nerds, one of the records. But sadly, I counted only four women. But I do not have to complain, I was in a team with one. My team was made out of two mathematicians and me, a computer scientist. Because we are limited to only one computer, I was hacking most of the time, whereas the others prepared the problems and were doing the math. Due to this perfect parallelism we were able to solve the first four problems within an hour. However, unfortunately we were not able to solve any more problems after that, how frustrating. Until the end of the five hours, nearly every other team also solved these four problems, only nine teams managed to solve more.
And here we reached the end of the contest. After five hours of intense work, everyone was exhausted. After a short break, sample solutions were presented and then the final moment arrived: the award ceremony. And the winner is: team oachkatzlschwoaf++ (for the non-bavarian readers, this means squirrel tail) from the TUM. The first winner coming from my university in many years. As an alteration, they also received a metal trophy. Congratulations! My team reached tenth place in Germany - the third place of all teams from the TUM.
And so the day ended. We pilgrimaged back to the subway and rounded off the afternoon with a good play of Schafkopf.
One last notice, all 100 students together did not manage to eat all the pizza! This must not happen the next time.
