Horrifying scenes occured in Austria this fall. Under the pretext of a programming competition, a group of 15 students was lured to a remote alp in the Kleinwalsertal at the austrian-german border. The 5 man competitive programming task force of the Technical University of Munich has organized a whole cottage for this alleged 'training camp' to select and train teams for the upcoming NWERC this November.
But this was not the real nature of the camp. As the participants were soon to discover, solving programming problems made up just a small tiny part of the daily schedule. According to this schedule – colorfully designed to distract from its actual contents – students had to cook for themselves and go on a hiking tour through the local mountain cliffs. Both items were equally terrifying, given the Computer Science students' culinary skills and physical abilities.
The most basic human needs were disregarded in the course of a project with code name 'LAN Party', which was designed to deprive us of our sleep. Even worse, there was no internet access in the whole area. And this was not all, there were plenty of hours of 'stuff' planned every day where our coaches would do the most evil things to us they could come up with, including dynamic programming and segment trees and in the evening even exposed us to the influence of alcohol.
Finally, the timeslot 'cleaning' was just as dangerous as it sounds.
Now that this martyrium is over and we are back to the wifi-zone, what have been the results of it?
First of all, very suprisingly, all of us have survived, although the psychological damages can only be estimated.
Secondly, three teams have been selected and prepared for the NWERC this November in Linköping, Sweden, where they will again be at the mercy of their coaches.
And most of all, our cooking and climbing skills certainly have improved, although they were much better than expected, and we did actually have an amazing week! :)
